Sourcecut

Turns a topic into a fact-checked, narrated video, made on your own Mac. Every number on screen has a source.

// Research, claims ledger, script, voice, music and render. Vertical 9:16 and landscape 16:9 from the same script.

I'll email you when it launches. The newsletter only if you tick the box.

Sourcecut Studio

Four steps. No timeline.

A local app sits on top of the engine. You make the calls a director would; it does the research, the writing and the rendering.

  1. Pick a template

Story, history, listicle or a GitHub repo promo.

  2. Type a topic

A question, an event, a product page or a repo link.

  3. Read the script

See the sourced claims each line relies on.

  4. Approve the video

Or ask for a change in plain words.

What sets it apart

Three things it won't skip.

Every claim has receipts

A claims ledger comes before the script.

Research lands in a ledger first. A claim counts as verified with two independent sources, or one authoritative one. Every scene lists the claims it uses, disputed figures are hedged in the voice-over, and a check flags any number on screen that has no source.

// Fact-checking is on by default in the history, science, GitHub and listicle templates.

History template · 73 sJallianwala Bagh, 1919.

From the ledger behind this reel

17 claims17 verified18 sources

Dyer reported 1,650 rounds fired, over about ten minutes.

Verifiedparliament.uk · wikipedia.org · theweek.in

On screen it is labelled as Dyer's own figure.

The official Hunter Committee death toll was 379.

Verifiedparliament.uk · wikipedia.org · theweek.in

The reel also gives the Congress estimate of about a thousand, and says the toll is still disputed.

Thousands had gathered in the Bagh, many for Baisakhi.

Verifiedwikipedia.org · theweek.in

Estimates run from about 6,000 to 20,000, so the screen only says "thousands".

A fund for Dyer in Britain raised over £26,000.

Verifiedwikipedia.org · outlookindia.com · deccanchronicle.com

Totals vary between sources (£26,317 and £28,000), so the screen says "over £26,000".

Your machine, your keys

No account with me. No fee per video.

Voice, word timing, music and rendering run on your Mac. The writing step is your choice: Claude Code, your own Anthropic API key, or a local model through Ollama, with the app fetching the sources itself.

Templates with a point of view

Each one has its own pacing, look and cast.

Story

Short punchy lines, kinetic type and a pixel-art presenter who lip-syncs, blinks and reacts.

The reel at the top

History

Public-domain archive photos where real ones exist, drawn scenes where they don't, plus maps and timelines.

The Jallianwala Bagh reel

Listicle

“Don't do X until you've seen these.” A talking presenter, a running terminal log and a comment-to-get-the-link ending.

GitHub promo

Star counters, terminal demos and feature grids. Every number comes from the GitHub API or the README, with the date.

41 scene components today. Each video gets its own palette, type and music, so two videos from one template don't look or sound the same.

FAQ

Before you ask

Is it free?

Yes. Sourcecut will be free and open source when it launches. You run it on your own machine, so there's nothing to pay me per video.

Will there be a hosted version?

I'm considering one, for people who would rather not run models on their own computer. Nothing is decided yet. If you'd use it, tick the box when you join. That's how I'll decide.

What hardware does it need?

Right now, a Mac with Apple Silicon. The voice, timing and music models run on its GPU through PyTorch and Apple's MLX. It's built and tested on an M5 Pro with 48 GB of memory, and those models take about 18 GB of disk. A local writing model in Ollama needs more on top.

I'll publish tested minimum specs before launch. Windows and Linux aren't supported yet.

Is it only for Reels and Shorts?

No. The same script renders vertical 9:16 and landscape 16:9, so one topic gives you a short and a YouTube cut.

Do I need to code?

No. Sourcecut Studio covers the whole path: pick a template, type a topic, read the script, watch the video, then approve it or ask for a change. Every step is also a command if you prefer a terminal.
